I'm sure we'll get better at this... right?!??
This WASN'T one of those times.
We started getting ready at 9.30am but finally left at 11.30am. Two hours to get the whole family ready? Goodness, what nonsense is this!?
At 9.30am, I sent a text saying we'll pick the muffins up at 10.15am.
At 10am, DN was all nicely decked out in jeans and a t-shirt. Even his socks were on. He was the only one dressed. I sent another text - 10.45am.
At 10.15am, PF was still in his boxers replying to some work emails. The baby was also dressed but had just pooped. Argh, and now she wants to feed. Never mind, send another text - 11am.
At 10.45am, the diaper bag was finally packed, the adults were all dressed, but the toddler was now only in his underwear because he had taken off his wet jeans. Hold on, wet jeans? Yes, wet jeans. DN was secretly playing with water as I fed the baby and as PF was working at the computer. Okay. Keep calm. Keep calm. Don't lose the plot. Re-dress toddler and let's go! Er, no. WE FORGOT TO SET UP THE CAR SEAT! Send another text - 11.30am.
At 11.15am, you'd think we would have left by now right? No. Let's just say after the whole rigmarole of putting the car seat together (the fabric bits and bobs were just washed and still hanging on the line) and then setting it up in the car, my sweat-drenched, toiling husband had to take a shower.
Sigh.
We left at 11.30am.

The Taste of Freedom
As you already know, my confinement ended last Tuesday. WOOT! Being cooped up at home for a whole month did wonders for my sanity, looks (my eyebrows now look like this) and body (no exercise + 3 heavy meals daily = this). So the day I received my "get out of jail" card, I got the hell out of there faster than you can say, "And this is what I really think about confinement!" *insert rude sign*
What do you think I did on my first trip out?
Eat?
Shop?
Massage?
Pedicure?
Trim eyebrows?
The answer of course, is EAT! We went to our favourite haunt - Shimbashi Soba and I had my usual "dessert and tea" set. Ah... absence makes the heart go fonder and the dessert tastier! And this, my dear friends, is what freedom looks like. :)
vanilla ice cream, fried soba chips (partially hidden), mochi with peanut powder,
cheesecake crepe with orange sauce, rice mochi with red bean paste
As it was our first trip out with DS, we made it a quick one. Remembering our very first trip out with DN and how we used NOTHING in the diaper bag, we refused to learn our lesson and again left the house with a bag that was heavier than the baby. Well at least we were prepared. For 3 months in a bomb shelter.
Of course, DS was a little dream. Except for a little bit of fussing, PF and I had a pretty relaxing tea. :)

Our First Staycation
The last time we did this, we picked the wrong hotel. 'Wrong' because it was along Havelock Road, and since we weren't that keen on introducing DN to the world of Zouk, we just went to the hotel pool. *yawn*
This time round, we checked into Orchard Hotel. Ah, decisions, decisions. Pool? Orchard Road? Pool? Orchard Road?
ORCHARD ROADDD! *deep guttural sound from the bowels of my shopping deprived being*
So shop I did. And suffered I did! (at the end of the day) You see, for this pregnancy, I've been as mobile as Raffles' statue. It's no wonder I'm looking more and more like Barbapapa everyday. Just less pink and with more hair. So imagine me in all my stagnant and stationary glory,
So yup, we didn't even make it down to the hotel pool. We saw it from our room window though, and had good intentions to squeeze in a dip in the pool, if that counts for anything. :p
The highlight of the weekend for DN had to be the bus and MRT rides. He had a blast flagging the bus down, hee hee.
$1. That's all it takes to make this little guy happy. He loves bus rides!
Even after we'd arrived at our station, we hung around just to let him see the trains zoom past.We also made a trip down to the National Museum to check out the Verner Panton exhibition. Very cool. PF and I took turns to play with DN in the Phantasy Landscape so we could wander around the exhibition.
In all, we stayed 2 nights. One of the best things had to be knowing there was a buffet breakfast waiting for us in the morning and it only being an elevator ride away. Sweet. This is what DN had for breakfast - hard boiled egg, sausage, pancakes, dried nuts and fruits - ON HIS PLATE. On MY plate, he ate the noodles and on PF's plate, he ate the cold tofu. Halfway through breakfast, I had to bring him to the toilet to poo. -___-
It was a good weekend. :)

Since I'm here and DN is there, I'm going to blog about our last days together. (That sounds bloody awful though!)
Before I left, I wanted to do as many fun things with DN as I could (see zoo posts below). On Monday, I had to get a bank transfer done, so we took a bus down to town. DN loves to take the bus and he loves to tap the card on the reader.
We now make him carry his own backpack. Of course, when I carry him, it's back to square one really. -_- Anyway, the backpack's got a pack of crayons, a notebook, a small book and a tiny toy in it. It's for times when he's done with lunch/dinner and we need him to wait for us. ;)
It was nice being with DN for a few hours. I finished my errand in half an hour, then we had lunch,
Look at him! He's so pleased! When we got to the bus stop, he immediately started repeating, "Card! Card! Please! Please! Card! Mama!" until I let him hold it. I needn't have worried because he held onto it like it was a pot of gold.
Mighty pleased being on the bus.
We had lunch at Ichiban Boshi and had the Black Pepper Cod set - (clockwise) Chawanmushi, Miso Soup, Salmon Handroll (this was an extra order), Mushroom Tamago Rice Bowl and Hot Plate Black Pepper Cod.
My shopping motto : Never think of how much you spent. Think of how much you SAVED!

You know you're watching too much Wimbledon when your 22 month old suddenly starts swinging AND GRUNTING while you're watching Wimbledon.
Here he is, doing a "monica seles".
After taking pity on DN "playing tennis" with a hand-held broom, we toyed with the idea of getting him a cheap set of rackets to play with. But of course, being the lazy bums that we are, DN continued playing tennis with ladles, cups and fly-swatters (UGH, imagine the fly parts flying around) until...
... we had dinner at Pasta Waraku. Yes indeed! A Japanese restaurant helped realise my son's Wimbledon dreams, haha. Let me explain.

We didn't give it a second thought until PF brought DN for a walk while waiting for our food. Suddenly, DN came running back with this.

Animal Resort
Last Saturday, DN and Caryn visited Animal Resort and had a swell time. After a breakfast of prata (DN lurves prata) and thosai at Jalan Kayu, we swung over to Seletar Farmway 5 to meet Caryn and her parents. We got there at 10am and left at 11.30am. That tiny little farm entertained us suitably for 1.5 hours.
DN and Caryn fed the
- goats
- cranes
- fish
- guinea pigs
- rabbits
- chickens
- geese
- turkey and
- cancer bird
Yes, cancer bird. It's a farm, not a zoo, so the cages weren't labelled. And us being the city mice that we are, we had no idea what this animal was.We stood outside his cage for a good 15 minutes, arguing about that long sac hanging off his chin.
Carla : It's a goiter!
PF : It's a cyst!
Noel : It's Ebenezer Scrooge!
Me (thinking) : It's going to eat our children!
We concluded that he smoked too much in his younger days and is paying for it now with that cancerous cyst. We gave him some bread and christianed him "cancer bird". As we left, Caryn said, "Bye cancer bird!" Oops. The Animal Resort is free for all. You just need to buy feed for the animals - $2 for 3 packets. My advice is, just buy the bread, carrots and fish food. As tasty as they are, the turkey and chickens weren't exciting to feed at all and the rabbits and guinea pigs were too blind to find the food dropped into their cages.
Here's DN feeding the rabbits, but...
... doing this instead! I bet they didn't know what hit them. LOL.
There were 2 goats there. Until Noel (the observant city mouse) pointed it out, the 3 of us never knew that goats have rectangular pupils! Did YOU know?
Looks like Mr Goat needs a pedicure... big time. When I got this packet of food, I told Carla, "Cool! Pileons! Wonder what they look like."
I think I remember Carla going something like this, "Prrrrthhhh! Wa-hahahaha!" I think she was glad I didn't say anything about "jurkeys".This was the only decent picture we got of DN & Caryn. Thank goodness for digital cameras.

If parents are hothousing their kids by flashing 60 cards a minute in their faces, signing them up for shichida-kumon-mensa-needlework-unicycling-and-whatnot classes, PF and I decided to beat them at their own game by introducing DN to his first REAL drink before he turns 2. Ha! Let me show you what true kiasu-ism is!
(It also helps DN relax after a long day of knitting classes.)
Before you call the police on us, we were actually at Pontini (Grand Copthorne) for my Dad's birthday dinner. I plonked DN on the bar stool for fun and the restaurant manager gave him a cup of warm water for fun!

It's scary how much DN understands us. Here's an example.
We were shopping at Taka today and as usual, after sitting in the stroller for some time, DN started asking to be
When he wants to be carried, he will pat his chest with both hands, reach out to the appointed carry-er and say, "pao pao". When he did that just now, I told him, "Okay DN, Mommy will carry you later okay? Let's take the lift down first." DN nodded and we waited for the lift.
Now, of course, I had no intention of carrying him once we went down. (I'm such a liar!) I was just hoping he would forget. But he didn't! The minute the lift doors opened and we walked out to the street, he patted his chest again and reached out to me. I was like, "Wha...?! He understood!?"
Humph. Coincidence. Never mind. Try bluffing him again. "DN, Mommy will carry you later okay? Let's walk down the street to Borders first okay? I'll carry you when we get there." DN nodded and we set off again (me keeping my fingers crossed he would forget).
So we walked from Taka to Wheelock Place. The minute we walked through the doors at Wheelock Place, DN looked at me, patted his chest and reached out to me again. Woah Nelly, he understood! Looks like our days of baby-bluffing are over, and the days of code-speak are here to stay.
Code-speak? Let me explain.
For the past 2-3months or so, PF and I have been sounding very much like secret agent spelling bees.
PF : "Okay, you distract him, I'll keep the C-R-A-C-K-E-R-S."
Me : "Okay, make sure you keep the P-U-T-I-N-G (pacifier) out of sight."
DN : "???"
or
PF : "Where are you going?"
Me : "I'm going to throw this B-O-X away. If he sees it, it'll remind him of the T-O-Y he's not supposed to P-L-A-Y with."
DN : "Guitar!"

... er, sort of... (heh heh!)
Funny Bee and I brought DN for a Swirl Swap Swop at the Swirl Boutique (love their clothes!) yesterday. What is a "swirl swap swop"? The idea's simple. Springclean your wardrobe. Bag the stuff you don't wear anymore (or, in my case, CAN'T wear anymore). Bring it down to Swirl. Toss it on the floor. Sift through the pile for stuff that other people don't want. Eat a cupcake. Drink some orange squash. Stop toddler from destroying assorted vintage props lying around the shop. (eg: rare typewriter) And that's it!
I saw someone make off with two of my stuff - a Diesel dress that I can only squeeze one leg into now, and a long ethnic skirt with bells (don't ask) that I never had the guts to wear.
I also overhead another lady remark, "Aiyoh, why so small one?!" when my stuff was added to the pile. Part of me beamed, "YEAH! She said 'small'! I'm not fat!" Then the other non-deluded half said, "Oi. You brought stuff that you USED to be able to wear." -_-
No matter. As long as the toddler had fun, what's another bruised, deflated, squashed, flat-as-prata ego?
Before going, I was worried that DN would leave the store in a post-El Nino state. Dresses off their hangers, bags on the floor, torn art work... but none of that happened because the big pile of clothes in the middle of the shop was enough to keep him occupied for the hour that we were there. :D He rummaged through the pile, carried clothes from sofa to pile to sofa to pile to sofa again, held out pink tops at other swoppers, gestured at the takings of other swoppers, ate one chocolate cupcake and...
(taken by Zann, one of the Swirl girls)
He's been mentioned in one of their blog posts. Ah, such is fame.
HA!

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a terrible traveller, literally. A bad dream for me would be to sit in a cab, and then on a ferry. A nightmare would be cab - ferry - HELICOPTER! I will shoot myself in that dream.

Strangely enough, I'm okay (sort of) on buses. As long as the bus is not too crowded and the bus driver is not having a relationship with the brake pedal, I should be okay. Taxis are another story.
So when I had to pop into town today, I decided to take a bus with DN and not a cab. He was really quite good on the bus. He sat on my lap 80% of the time and busied himself with smiling and waving at fellow commuters and looking out the window. Whenever we passed a construction site (which was quite often coz everyone is en-bloc-ing their lovely old condos -_-), he would point and start shouting. He really likes those excavators and cranes! The only challenging thing was carrying him, the diaper bag and the stroller up and down the bus.
PF sent us home.
DN's famous "SMILE!" face

Oops, haven't written anything for 2 weeks because of all the marking I had to clear. :(
Last weekend, we went to Sentosa with some friends. The original plan was to meet at Sentosa, but it started to pour when we left the house, and from where we were, the sky over Marina Bay was BLACK.
Great.
Time to activate Plan B - another weekend stuck in a shopping centre. -_-
So we pulled into Vivocity (which should be renamed Confusing City, btw) and waited for the rest to arrive. I think they brought the good weather with them from Bukit Panjang coz the sky cleared up. So we packed everyone up and drove to Sentosa. DN's first time at the beach, here we come!
At the beach, PF impressed us with the groundsheet he made at his worksite. It measured 5m x 5m, weighed 20kg and almost broke the carrybox it was in, but our over-the-hill asses would be more than adequately protected from the Siloso sand. (Of course, what does everyone do when the groundsheet is finally laid out? They plonk their bags and food on it and go sit on the sand.)
DN liked the beach. But he liked it in a serious way. Let me explain.
The minute we hit the beach, DN had this permanent frown on his face. He was playing with the sand, but frowning at it too. I think he didn't really fancy the grainy sand. I actually expected him to dive right into the sand, embrace it, toss into the air, roll about in it and basically have a "The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Music" moment.
But he didn't. He was actually quite dainty and reserved as he scooped up sand and dumped it into a pail, and he was frowning the whole time. Hmm. It must be all our exclamations of, "No! Dirty! Don't touch that! Eeeks! Stop! No! Dirty! Put that down! Aiyoh! Dirty!" that have instilled a sense of 'cleanliness' in him.
Compare this to Anthony, our New Zealander friend, who invited us over to his condo for a BBQ. As we chatted happily next to the BBQ pit, Levi, his 1.5 year old baby came crawling towards us, clad only his diaper. He crawled over puddles of water, over dirt, over soot and by the time he arrived at our feet, he was black!
Did Anthony know? Yes. Did Anthony do anything? Of course not. He's not bleeding, he's still got 4 limbs attached, what for?
A normal Singaporean grandparent would have scooped him up ... wait, a normal Singaporean grandparent wouldn't have even let him down in the first place.
It's a very Asian thing.
Will YOU let your baby crawl in soot?

If it looks like my feet, feels like my feet and smells like my feet, it's probably my feet!

We had dinner at this great Japanese restaurant at Vivocity after the beach. You MUST click on, and enlarge this picture. It's worth it! ;)

It isn't often that we go out shopping with DN. Let's just say that if he carries on in this manner, his future girlfriend will have to rely on shopping with her girlfriends. Unless...
1. She stuffs him with a good lunch prior to triapsing around Robinsons for hours.
2. She packs some munchies for him (even though he's just had lunch).
3. She brings out extra wet wipes to clean up after him.
4. She doesn't forget to keep him occupied with some entertainment as she looks at shoes.
5. And of course, she must reward him with a spin in a fast car after the

When my brother Josh (who's 17 years my junior) was little, LY used to come over and play with him all the time. Josh had this strange looking bee toy. It was a bee-robot-monster-thing and Josh loved it. LY came over one day, saw it and asked him what on earth it was. He said, "It's a funny bee."
Wah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
I don't know why, but it cracked us up. Funny bee! He's 100% right! It IS a funny looking bee! From that day on, LY was known as Funny Bee. Even now (and he's 15 years old), he still calls her Funny Bee when he forgets to be macho, cynical and indifferent.
Since LY is so adverse to the name Aunty LY, I shall christian her Funny Bee again. Actually, if truth be told, it felt weird calling her Aunty LY too. Funny Bee sounds right. So LY, please reprise your role as Funny Bee, friend to all children and giver of good gifts! ;)
DN and I met Funny Bee, Kristie, Kyra, Ember & Imelda at Globetrotters for lunch yesterday. Globetrotters is the Mecca of all kiddie restaurants. Parents love it coz they get to dump their kids in the play room. Kiddies love it coz they get to dump their parents in the restaurant. Everyone's happy!
Before you can enter the play room, you have to remove your shoes. After removing DN's shoes, I told LY to take a whiff. Now, only a best friend will obey such an instruction. So she did and I'm not sure if I'm her best friend anymore. What she said cannot be published on this blog, haha. She can't believe that those little 14cm feet can produce such odours. Oh gosh. I can't imagine what they'll smell like when he's 15, and they are encased in socks and school shoes from 7am until 4pm.
The play room had everything a zoo had - screaming and sweaty children, monkeys climbing all over the place, and even a funky smell. Lovely. The play room assistant was walking around in a daze, looking very defeated. Poor thing. I bet she'd already made a vow to be celibate.
Ah well! At least the kiddies had fun!
Where's
DN found a slice of plastic bread in the play room and held it the entire time. Here he is baking it. Hee.
We went home for his afternoon nap and when he woke up at 5pm, LY and I decided to drop by the Mango sale at Isetan Scotts. * note to self: never bring a mobile and active baby into a changing room with curtains for doors.
We had dinner at Mos Burger and DN abandoned his fish and broccoli porridge when our corn soup and potato croquette arrived. I wonder why. -_-
"Broccoli vs deep fried mashed potato cutlet seasoned with special spices that you never put into my porridge. Go figure, Mom."
DN : "Thanks for bringing me and my mommy out Funny Bee!"

Royston and Shi Ling got married on Sunday (2 Dec) and we
DN normally sleeps between 830 and 900pm so we had to play around with his naps that day. We pushed his morning nap to 1130am (from 10am) and his afternoon nap from 4pm to 6pm so he could last longer that night. When he woke up at 7pm, off we went to the Marina Mandarin.
You see, we've discovered this about DN. As long as he is constantly being fed, he will sit nicely at the table. The only "impolite" thing he does is shout "mum-mum-mum-mum!" if the food doesn't reach his mouth fast enough. Eating out is pretty easy now as long as we have his Munchkin suction bowl. Just stick it on the table, throw some rice / noodles in, and that'll keep him busy (and the restaurant staff too, coz 70% of it ends up on the floor).
Of course, we couldn't use the Munchkin bowl at the wedding dinner. (damn those posh tablecloths!) So I spent most of the dinner cutting food up, mashing it and feeding it to Mr Bottomless Pit. Whatever we ate, he ate. DN loved the soup, roasted duck and cod fish. :)
- Cold Dish (Crispy Silver Fish, Roasted Duck, Lobster Salad)
- Shark's fin in clear chicken broth
- Teriyaki cod
- Chili crab with fried man tou
- Chocolate mousse
- Wedding cake

We had breakfast at the NUS canteen at the Botanic Gardens last weekend. (cheap, good and empty!) DN was a good little one and sat in the highchair, eating his bread while PF had Nasi Lemak and I had kaya toast and eggs.
During breakfast, we found out that he understood what "smile!" meant and can now smile on cue! Yippee, no more pictures of a grumpy baby. I think.
We wanted to stroll around the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden after breakfast but couldn't because the carpenter was on his way to our place to finish up the doors. (we're renovating)
This is what his face looks like when you say "Smile Der Nen!" LOL.
DN : "I'm so thrilled there's bread on my cheek!"
His smiles only last for a few seconds. Wasn't quick enough here.
He started squirming and struggled to get out of the highchair when he spotted some mynahs behind him. He loves to chase after hopping birds.
EWWW.
We were seated outside, next to a row of shrubs AND THESE MILLIPEDES!!!

DN turned 14 months old yesterday and bringing him out is getting easier and easier. PF finished work early so we decided to have dinner at Shimbashi Soba at Paragon. I brought DN's porridge out in a thermos and we reached the restaurant at about 6.30pm. Perfect timing! While waiting for our food (Cold Soba & Salmon Sashimi for PF; Soba in Soup with Seaweed & Mushroom Tempura for me), I fed DN his porridge.
He sat nicely in the high chair and flirted with all the waitresses. Great! (It kept him occupied while I ate.) When he was done with his porridge, he started eyeing my noodles, and going "MUM-MUM-MUM-MUM" at the top of his voice. Really. People were giving us funny looks.
Here he is, "beo-ing" my noodles and signing "please".
We always ask him if he has anymore in his mouth before we feed him more food. And he obliges with a big "ahhhhh..."!
Hey! There's still a little bit of noodle left!
We went to ELC (Early Learning Centre) after dinner (thanks for the idea, Ling!) because they have lotsa toys out for kids to play with. DN gravitated towards the household equipment. (Should I be worried???) Here he is, walking backwards (his new trick) with the vacuum cleaner.

We brought DN to the Bird Park yesterday. We figured it's time he saw something more natural than shopping malls on weekends. (What!? We're Singaporean! And I need new clothes!) It looks like we'll have to expose DN to more natural things on a more frequent basis because he was more interested in the man in the hawk costume during the Birds of Prey show than the actual hawk itself. -_-
Everyone's looking at the hawk flying around but not DN, nooooo. Nothing grabs a baby's attention more than a 6-ft tall furry (not feathery) bird walking around in shorts and suspenders.
Spotted a headless penguin in the penguin enclosure
There he is again!
(100% undoctored photos. These are really an example of our inferior photography skills.)
Have you seen the prices at the food joints at these tourist attractions? They should have a first-aid station nearby, to help those whose hearts stop after looking at the menu.
DN : "$9.50 for a burger and 5 fries? I hope there's some left for my education." (money, not fries)
DN : "Hmm... a potential candidate. I think I'll call her up in 18 years' time."
(DN met a friend at the bird park.)
If you look closely, you will see that the fan has only 2 blades because the 3rd one is in DN's hand!
Yes, he ripped one out.
DN with his grandpa and his trusty hat.
